Note: The Globe discography reveals many affiliated labels, yet only a tiny handful of releases under its own name. Globe Recording Studio did not run a song-poem label per se, but was a ubiquitous factory for the stuff nonetheless. Although they would put their imprint on one-of-a-kind acetate demos, they appear to have had hardly any interest in slapping the Globe name on larger runs of vinyl.

Operated by Jim Maxwell and his wife Glenna, Globe focused on serving up tunes and master recordings by the pound to scores of other outfits around the country. They worked under custom label names for individual customers who wanted to pretend to be a record company for a little while, handled occasional overflow work for some of the larger song-poem companies, such as Air and Preview, and contracted out record pressing for Halmark. Because their work pops up under so many different names and so rarely under their own, they have become something like the Zelig of song-poem concerns.

JoAnn Auborn, a pop singer with a warm, appealing voice, was Globe's main female vocalist. She also appeared under the names Joan Auborn, Kris Arden and Damita (or, as she was billed on one of William Arpaia's albums, Damila). Mary Kaye took the mic for the later years of Globe's run.

Sammy Marshall was Globe's male workhorse, singing under a series of variants of the name, such as Sonny Marshall, Sonny Marcell and Sonny Maracel. Other pseudonyms included Johnny Cargill, Ben Tate, Chuck Jones and Terry Bruce, and there were undoubtedly a whole lot more of them, as well. Sammy's style was usually schmaltzy and laid-back; he tended to whistle on his sibilants; he usually sounded a bit haunted, like one of the weird secondary characters in the early Popeye comics. Until seeing his teen-idol photo, I had thought of Sammy Marshall as a funny-lookin' white-haired old man -- rarely have voice and visage been at such odds. The word "forlorn" was practically coined just to describe Sammy's style.

Sammy Marshall didn't get to rock out a whole lot, but when he did, on song-poem hits such as "Twist And Turn" and "Rock And Roll Boogie Beat," he entered a higher realm.
